Matthew Flinders Park

Matthew Flinders Park is a scenic yet tranquil recreation area in Beerburrum.

It’s named after a captain as a tribute to his voyage and significant contributions.

Flinders was an English cartographer and navigator responsible for leading the very first circumnavigation of Australia. He is also responsible for being the first to use the country’s name, referring to the entire continent and Van Diemen’s Land.

Flinders undertook numerous discovery voyages in his lifetime, most especially between 1791 and 1803. When he tried to return to England in 1803, he was detained and arrested in Mauritius. He was in captivity for over six years, and during this time, he documented details of his discoveries. Unfortunately, his health suffered, and he failed to see how successful his book, A Voyage to Terra Australis, became.

Today, Matthew Flinders Park has become a popular tourist attraction, especially for those who want to experience Tibrogargan without dealing with crowds. The trail is recommended for walkers and mountain bikers of varying levels. Start your trail at the park and make your way to the Jack Ferris Lookout. Here you’ll eventually reach a viewpoint where you can appreciate the views of the Glass House Mountains.

It’s recommended to climb Mount Beerburrum while you’re at it since Flinders was famed for summitting it back in 1799. The climb is also the easiest way to get to panoramic views of the area. Drinking water is available on the trail, with other facilities include picnic tables, BBQs, and toilets. Keep in mind that fires and camping on-site are prohibited.

For safety on the Matthew Flinders Park trail, always be sure to follow the local signage. Additionally, do the necessary preparations beforehand, such as checking for the weather conditions and wearing the appropriate clothing.
