The markets’ history dates back to 1979 when Christa Barton, a ceramic artist, and her friend Gail Perry-Somers, conceptualised a European-style artisan and farmers’ market. What they created helped put craftspeople on the map, but more importantly, it helped inspire a sense of community. Back then, the pair held the markets in the CWA Hall where food and art stalls weren’t just put up, but out-of-work youth were encouraged to hone their skills in making goods and food products.

The first Eumundi Markets opened its doors to the public on March 24th, 1979, with just eight visitors. Today, it welcomes more than 1.6 million people who come to shop at over 600 stalls every year.

What makes this market unique is that they pioneered the policy of only selling locally made items. Because of this strong principle in mind and helping small entrepreneurs and the youth, it’s easy to see why it still stands firm today.

The markets are considered a critical business incubator and employ around 1,000 locals. It’s truly the best way to experience and taste the best of what the region has to offer.

The markets happen on Wednesdays and Saturdays; each day, you will find unique finds, including handmade toys, furniture, original art, independent fashion, jewellery, skincare, homeware, premium coffee and chocolates, cheese, tableware, cakes, and so much more. Aside from that, some specialty stalls also offer vegetarian food, healing modalities, wellness, and more.

The Eumundi Markets are renowned worldwide and for a good reason, so be sure you don’t miss out!
