Nelson Park

Nelson Park is a stunning lake and outdoor recreation area in Alexandra Headland. Located right across from The Mirage, the park is a haven for people seeking a tranquil day in nature.

It was named after a Presbyterian Church founding youth leader named Norman Nelson and built in 1979.

The park is an excellent alternative to a day at the beach, as it can get pretty busy during weekends. Head on over here for a moment of solitude; it’s easy to get some peace here since the only sounds you’ll hear are the birds. Rainbow lorikeets and honeyeaters are the most common sightings here, though, by the lake, herons, egrets, kingfishers, and black swans are abundant too.

Nelson Park has numerous facilities for a comfortable stay. These include BBQs, shelters, picnic tables, and a playground. It’s a terrific spot to bring the kids since the park is fenced in. The playground is unique because of its all-abilities design, with a KOMPAN structure custom-built into it. It’s unlike any other playground because of the many socio-emotional, cognitive, and sensorimotor elements that are sure to stimulate kids of all ages and abilities for hours. It also features slides of varying heights, a sand and water play area, interactive panels, and more.

One of the highlights here is the stunning bronze sculpture located on the small island in the lake; it’s called ‘Sisters by Choice‘. The sculpture features a black swan, which has long been an icon of Maroochydore and an egret, which is a symbol of Xiamen, which is the sister city of the Sunshine Coast in China. The birds are shown flying off together to symbolise cooperation and good relations among the two cities.

Nelson Park is a true gem in Alexandra Headland.
