Kilkivan is a small rural township located approximately 110 km northwest of Noosa Heads.

This historic township heralded Queensland’s first gold discovery in 1852, and subsequent findings escalated into a gold rush in the 1860s.

This extensive museum features a comprehensive display of mining-related exhibits and artefacts. Several historical buildings within Kilkivan show the town’s prominence in the late 19th century. You will find a few antique stores within the township, a cafe, and the town’s original bank.

Kilkivan is also known for the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride, which is held every April. Over 1,000 horses and riders ride between 20-30kms along the National Trail and into town for a grand parade.

Mudlo National Park is located only a short distance from Kilkivan, so make sure to stop by on your journey through the hinterland. The 22-sq.km park provides excellent views and enjoyable walking trails for sightseeing enthusiasts. The park is one of the few areas protecting native pine rainforests, the tall pine trees that once covered much of the surrounding coastal ranges.
