The Sunshine Coast Marathon & Community Run Festival is one of Australia’s most well-loved running events.

The festival is not-for-profit, and since its founding in 2012, they have raised more than $1.8 million for charity and community groups.

The marathon is held in August yearly to make the most out of the stunning Queensland winters. Runners can choose from a 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon, or a 2k for those in wheelchairs, kids, and families. All the road races take you through the breathtaking coastline that Alexandra Headland is known for, boasting white sand beaches and stunning vantage points by the sea. The half marathon features a single-loop circuit, while the full marathon involves a multi-loop circuit.

The Sunshine Coast Marathon & Community Run Festival is an excellent opportunity to book a winter holiday while making a difference. There’s something for everyone involved, including varying distances for people of all ages and abilities, music, family entertainment, great food, and a sports expo.

Each year, thousands of runners from near and far join in on one of the best marathons in Australia while raising money for dozens of charities and beneficiaries. For spectators, there are several vantage points from where you can enjoy views of the marathon. These include Fisherman’s Road Markets, the Bradman River House Café, and many other stations revolving around live music, picnics, and more.

In 2024,  the Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival will welcome thousands of local and interstate competitors and their supporters to its expo within the event precinct. 

Each year, the expo has grown in size and scope, offering participants and spectators an opportunity to stock up on the latest in fitness, health, apparel, nutrition, and supplements at expo-only special prices. 

Admission to the Expo is free, with two days of pre-event entertainment and race pack pick up on Friday and Saturday within the Expo. Race Day attracts over 8,000 runners across five events on Sunday.

Across the three days, the Expo is estimated to attract visitors of more than 12,000 participants, friends, family, and sporting enthusiasts. 

The event is part of the Association of International Marathons and Road Races. Because of its inclusive nature, allowing intellectual and physical disabilities participants has become a heart-warming marathon for many. The Ronald McDonald House Charities is a primary beneficiary as they provide accommodation and services for children who are seriously ill – together with their families.
