Chenrezig Institute

Located in the tranquil hills of the Sunshine Coast, Chenrezig Institute is a Buddhist study, retreat and monastic centre which provides a serene place where you can experience the authentic teachings of Tibetan Buddhists.

Many people come here to benefit from meditation classes and retreats and enjoy the beautifully maintained gardens and the adjoining tropical forest.

Chenrezig Institute, Buddhist Study, Eudlo, Sunshine Coast

Chenrezig Institute was established in 1974 and was the first of its kind in the western world. It remains one of the largest institutes today (A registered charitable organisation affiliated with the FPMT). The first course offered was a month-long meditation course conducted by Lama Rinpoche and Lama Yeshe in the Diamond Valley. Almost 200 people attended this course. A few students wanted to continue studying, so the mediation centre was established. With the ongoing efforts of volunteers and students, this land was converted from a cattle grazing field to a vibrant centre for Buddhist education.

Chenrezig is the most loved figure in Buddhist Tradition. His mantra “OM MANI PADME HUM” means “all-seeing”, manifesting itself in various forms. Chenrezig represents compassion and continuous work for the benefit of everyone. Presently, the institute houses Tibetan Lamas, a community of monks and nuns, residents, students, volunteers and guests who all work to make the world a better place to live.

The institute provides various programs, including meditation retreats, teachings on Buddhism, advanced study courses, art classes, and workshops on Buddhist psychology and mental well-being. Basic courses focus on physical, mental and emotional well-being and also introduce you to Buddhism. Advanced courses focus intensely on Buddhist philosophy and specific practices and teachings. Visitors are welcome to meditate within the institute without charges or admission fees, but donations are gratefully received.

The centre also has accommodation facilities, a vegetarian cafe, library, meditation hall, art studio, memorial garden and beautiful grounds, all open to the general public from Thursday to Sunday every week.

Even though the Chenrezig Institute is a Monastery and a place for quiet contemplation, everyone is welcome to visit! Children of all ages are welcome (there is even a Kind Kids program on Welcome Days) and pets on a lead are welcome to the Centre.

You can easily reach the institute from Eudlo, Maroochydore or the Bruce Highway.
